Caracas muerde es un libro de 30 cro?nicas cortas que se convierten en asombrosos relatos sobre la psicologi?a de la violencia en una ciudad asediada por si? misma. Los protagonistas representan a todos los tipos de ciudadanos de Caracas: taxistas, gente con dinero, trabajadores de oficina, madres solteras o estudiantes para los que salir cada di?a significa jugar a la ruleta rusa. Un libro de intere?s para el gran pu?blico por su actualidad, su ritmo trepidante y su sencilla profundidad. Al margen de la política, la crónica representa la vida cotidiana. Como buena obra literaria nos muestra aquellos aspectos de la sociedad latinoamericana, en concreto la Caraqueña, que movilizan una violencia callejera. Esa violencia está generada por el miedo, la exclusión, la falta de alicientes, en general, la falta de horizonte. Aunque en Europa todavía vivamos en una sensación de protección contra la violencia, estas crónicas nos hacen conscientes de la capacidad de violencia inherente al ser humano cuando sus condiciones de vida no son alentadoras. "Podemos pensar en las crónicas que componen Caracas muerde como una serie de escenas intensas y breves. En este sentido, la crónica es una opción válida para individualizar las historias que configuran el "magma brutal" de la ciudad (Torres, 2012: contratapa). Cada una de las treinta crónicas de Caracas muerde, algunas de apenas unas pocas páginas, ofrece un vistazo rápido a una experiencia individual, desde el robo de un libro en el metro hasta la muerte de un niño. No hay un relato abarcador que las contenga y, cuando se leen en conjunto, queda claro el carácter arbitrario del miedo y la violencia en Caracas. Según Cristina Raffalli (2016), Torres desafía las expectativas del lector al ofrecerle una cara, una costumbre o lo que se ve desde una ventana, en lugar de un nombre propio, una fecha y una ubicación geográfica, como lo hacen los textos periodísticos tradicionales. A lo largo de Caracas muerde, Torres hace énfasis en la autenticidad de sus historias, subrayando el modo como sus personajes han presenciado y sentido la violencia que los rodea (Torres, 2012: 157-158). A esto se agrega que Torres no construye una voz abarcadora para narrar sus historias. Al contrario, las crónicas están narradas desde la perspectiva de personajes jóvenes y viejos, ricos y pobres, hombres y mujeres. El escritor de crónicas es un ventrílocuo al que la gente le otorga su voz (Villoro, 2012: 580); sus personajes no son gente famosa o importante, ni gente con poder, sino personas normales, como sus lectores (Jaramillo Agudelo, 2012: 27). La historia titulada "Un guionista al que se le secaron las ideas", por ejemplo, está contada desde el punto de vista de un barrendero de la calle que puede observar lo que pasa en ella sin ser notado, porque su oficio lo convierte en un personaje invisible para quienes transitan a su alrededor. Las luchas cotidianas, como las largas colas para comprar comida (Torres, 2012: 78), son el telón de fondo de estas historias. Al comentar Caracas muerde, Jesús Santana (2012) sostiene que las situaciones y emociones experimentadas por los personajes de este texto son compartidas por los lectores que viven en la misma ciudad. Por eso, no resulta sorprendente que Caracas muerde haya sido durante más de un año el libro mejor vendido de la editorial Punto Cero (Raffalli, 2016) y que haya tenido múltiples ediciones hasta hoy.
